Marley's concern has been echoed by some researchers,
whose studies suggest that young people gain self-
esteem from books that feature a positive, realistic main
character of their own ethnicity. And readers of other
ethnicities benefit from those same books by discovering
what they share in common with someone who is different
from them.
Turning frustration into action, Marley started a book drive
on social media in 2015. She was in sixth grade. The goal
of Marley's #1000blackgirlbooks campaign was to
distribute a thousand books with a black girl as the main
character to schools and libraries. Donations soon poured
in from publishers, bookstores, celebrities, and others. By
2018, she had already collected 11,000 books. Marley.
