More often than not as observed in some tribes, a second set of parent which are not biologically related are adopted at the birth of a child and these extra parents also help in raising the child.

- Children learnt how to take responsibility at a tender age and the older ones passed down wisdom to the younger ones.
- In a case where one or both parents are dead, children had had foster parents or grand parents to carter for them.
It is important to note that Native Americans also had Chief, healers, Hunters etc.
The role of the chief was assumed by a person depending on what the tribe needed at a particular point in time.
The elders comprised of older adults whole through the wisdom gathered over the years were able to teach the younger generation through oral tradition. There was not much written at those times.
The hunters and warriors provided food and defended the tribe during times of war.
The Healers cared for the sick and the injured . They are akin to to the medical doctors of today.
