Jane and Elizabeth ran the 50m race. Jane had a head start because she had an injury. Jane started at the 12 meter line and ran 2 meters per second. Elizabeth ran from the starting line and ran 5 meters per second.when will Elizabeth catch up to Jane and at which point.

x is seconds passed, y is meters ran

Jane: y=2x+12
Elizabeth: y=5x

now solve by substitution 5x=2x+12, 3x=12, x=4


catches up after 4 seconds, plug back 5*4= 20


ANSWER: catches up after 4 seconds, 20 meters into the race
