In general, how did different european colonial powers treat and perceive native americans during their initial encounters in the new world?

Most of them saw them only as animals, or at least didn't want any settlers taking the Indians side, so the higher ups stereotyped them down and lower then animals.

The french called Native Americans "Noble Savages" and were primarily concerned with trading for furs.
